Give Up On Your Habit Of Judging Others
All of us are judgemental, it is in our nature to be judgemental. However, our judgements sometimes go to extreme levels. We don’t even realize how fast we judge. Judging (forming an opinion about someone or something based on thoughts, feelings, evidence, and sometimes based on our preconceived notions about someone or something) others helps us to feel as though we are secure.
The problem is not judging
others, the problem is too often we pass judgements without a lot of context,
which often is negative some way or the other. It is best to break your habit
of passing judgements at the drop of a hat which can improve both your relationships and your emotional
well-being. Here are a few ways to do that:
Stop suspecting- Don’t
always be suspicious of people. This is what gives rise to curiosity about the
person, leading to spying upon one another. It is equally important to not be
envious of others and don’t spend time holding a grudge and nurse no hostility
against some other person. The key to a good life is being fellow-brothers and
servants of Allah.
Bring about a change in your way of thinking- Everything, especially our judgement of others, boils down to our
thought process. If someone is behaving in a certain way, say someone is
shouting at you, don’t judge him instantly. Change your way of thinking and see
the difference. Put yourself in the person’s shoes and then form an opinion. Is
the reason behind her shouting justified? What would have been your stance if
you were in his/her place? This will help you understand the person and the
position the individual is in better.
Be Forthright- The best
way to avoid passing judgement is by being straightforward with the person you’ve
formed the judgement about. If someone’s behaviour is bothering you, instead of
forming an opinion address it with the person. Ask straight out why the person
is behaving the way he or she is.
According to the Holy Quran,
being judgemental about someone (without a proper context) is a grave sin.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some
assumption is sin. [Quran,
49:12]
