Islamic Beliefs and Teachings that Every Muslim should Accept and Follow
The religion of Islam offers a
complete code of law and guidance. Anyone can convert to Islam by his/her own
discretion, without the need for any ceremony, any sermonizer involvement or
any other thing. Also, there is no concept of “original sin” since everyone is
born innocent, until someone commits a sin on their own will. Muslims should
follow their faith with understanding and reasoning, not blindly.
The Five Pillars of Islam:
- Declaration
of Faith (Kalimah Shahadah),
- Prayer (a
means to communicate with Allah and get close to Him) - the five daily prayers
of salaat are Morning (Fajr), Midday (Zuhr), Afternoon (Asr), Sunset (Maghrib)
and Nighttime (Isha),
- Fasting
during Ramadan (Saum) (through which a Muslim can purify himself spiritually
and physically, elevate his soul and obtain nearness to Allah),
- Tax on
Wealth ((Zakaat)- which can more appropriately be called the purification of
wealth, and
- Pilgrimage (Hajj)
to Mecca.
Fundamental Beliefs in Islam:
- Unity of
Allah (Tauheed) (acknowledgement of the Oneness of Allah is the most important
principle of Islam),
- Angels (Malai’kah)
(a belief in angels- which are spiritual beings created by Allah to obey Him
and carry out His commandments- is required),
- Holy Books
(Kutub) (the Muslims believe in the sacred books which include the Torah, the
Gospel of Jesus, the Psalms, and the Qur’an with Quran being the only book
which is completely error-free),
- Prophets (Anbiya) (there are many people who are considered to be
prophets who are revered by Muslims. Among them are Abraham, Ishmael, Moses,
Noah, John the Baptist, Jesus, and Mohammed. Mohammed is considered to be the
last prophet.),
- The Day of
Judgement (Yaumideen)
- Divine
Decree (Taqdir) (according to Muslims, the Divine Decree controls the eventual
outcome of all actions in this universe)
- The Holy Qur’an, the Sunnah and the Hadith are the three sources of Islamic law.
The Universality of Islam:
People often misconstrue the
religion, which can be attributed to how the western media often portrays Islam
and creates a picture of rigid and fanatical fundamentalists, which is far from
the truth. Islam is a universal religion, which is demonstrated in many ways
and on different levels:
- Acceptance
of all teachings
- No
compulsion in religion
- Equality of
Man
